MHSDS Submissions: Over a Decade of Supporting Better Mental Health Data
Ten years of turning community mental health activity into national insight.
Ten Years of Turning Community Mental Health Activity into National Insight
As healthcare continues its journey towards data-driven decision-making, the importance of high-quality mental health data has never been greater.
At MYMUP, supporting Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS) submissions is not a new initiative or an emerging capability. It is something we have been doing successfully for over a decade.
For more than ten years, MYMUP has been helping mental health providers collect, manage, validate, and submit data to NHS England, ensuring that the vital work being undertaken across community and voluntary sector services is represented within the national picture of mental health provision.
Over that time, we have seen both the MHSDS and the mental health landscape evolve significantly. We have also seen our own submission volumes grow year after year as more providers have trusted MYMUP to support their reporting requirements.
Today, we submit data on behalf of a growing number of organisations, helping ensure that community-based mental health services have a voice within the datasets that influence planning, commissioning, funding, and policy decisions across England.
Why the MHSDS Matters
The Mental Health Services Data Set is one of the most important sources of information available to NHS England.
It provides a national view of how mental health, learning disability, autism, and community support services are being delivered, who is accessing them, and what outcomes are being achieved.
Every month, providers across the country submit information that helps answer critical questions such as:
- How many people are accessing support?
- Which communities are receiving services?
- How quickly are people being seen?
- What interventions are being delivered?
- What outcomes are being achieved?
- Where are inequalities emerging?
- How is demand changing over time?
Without this information, it would be extremely difficult for commissioners, Integrated Care Systems, NHS England, and policymakers to understand where services are succeeding and where additional investment or intervention may be required.
The MHSDS provides the evidence needed to support better decision-making across the entire mental health system.
Recognising the Value of Community-Based Services
One of the most significant changes we have witnessed over the last decade is the increasing recognition of community and voluntary sector providers within mental health pathways.
Historically, many VCSE organisations delivered exceptional services but struggled to demonstrate their contribution through nationally recognised reporting mechanisms.
Today, that picture is changing.
As more providers contribute data through MHSDS submissions, the work being undertaken within communities is becoming increasingly visible to commissioners and system leaders.
This visibility matters.
Community-based organisations play a critical role in supporting mental health and wellbeing, often providing preventative interventions, early support, peer-led services, social prescribing programmes, and recovery-focused care that can prevent escalation into more intensive services.
By contributing to the MHSDS, these services become part of the wider evidence base that informs national and local decision-making.
Supporting Commissioners with Better Intelligence
Commissioners face increasing pressure to make informed decisions about where resources should be invested and how services can be designed to meet changing population needs.
High-quality MHSDS submissions provide valuable intelligence that supports this process.
The data helps commissioners understand:
- Demand for services
- Referral trends
- Access to care
- Waiting times
- Demographic patterns
- Service utilisation
- Outcome achievement
- Areas of unmet need
This allows commissioning decisions to be based on evidence rather than assumptions.
It also helps ensure that community providers delivering effective interventions are recognised for the contribution they make to local mental health systems.
As Integrated Care Systems continue to develop and place greater emphasis on prevention and community-based support, access to robust data becomes increasingly important.
Helping Providers Demonstrate Their Impact
While MHSDS reporting delivers value at a national level, many of the benefits are realised much closer to home.
For providers, participation in the MHSDS creates opportunities to better understand and evidence their own services.
Over the last ten years, we have seen organisations use their data to:
- Demonstrate service reach
- Evidence outcomes and impact
- Strengthen funding applications
- Support contract discussions
- Improve service quality
- Identify emerging trends
- Understand population needs
- Showcase the value of community interventions
Increasingly, organisations are recognising that data is not simply a reporting requirement.
It is a strategic asset.
The information collected through day-to-day service delivery can provide powerful insight into the difference services are making in people’s lives.
Growth Through Partnership
One of the aspects we are most proud of is the continued growth of our MHSDS submission programme.
What began with a small number of providers has expanded steadily over the years as organisations have sought a reliable, knowledgeable, and supportive partner to help manage their reporting requirements.
This growth reflects not only confidence in the MYMUP platform but also confidence in the expertise of the team behind it.
Successfully submitting data to national datasets requires far more than technology alone.
It requires an understanding of:
- National reporting requirements
- Data quality standards
- Validation processes
- Information governance
- Service delivery workflows
- Mental health reporting frameworks
Over the last decade, we have built this expertise alongside our providers, continually adapting to changing requirements and supporting organisations through every stage of the reporting process.
Improving Data Quality Across the Sector
One of the most significant benefits of long-term participation in the MHSDS has been the positive impact on data quality.
The process of collecting, validating, and submitting data encourages organisations to strengthen recording practices and improve consistency across services.
Over time, this creates:
- Better quality information
- Greater confidence in reporting
- Improved outcome measurement
- Stronger governance arrangements
- More meaningful service insights
The same data that supports national reporting also enables organisations to better understand their own performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
Good data supports better services.
That principle has remained true throughout every year of our MHSDS journey.
Looking Ahead
As demand for mental health services continues to increase, the need for reliable, high-quality data will only become more important.
The future of mental health commissioning, integrated care, prevention, and service improvement will increasingly depend upon organisations being able to evidence both activity and outcomes.
The role of the VCSE sector within this landscape is also continuing to grow.
Community providers are delivering vital support within mental health pathways and deserve to have their contribution recognised within national datasets and strategic decision-making processes.
At MYMUP, we remain committed to supporting organisations in achieving exactly that.
After more than ten years of successful MHSDS submissions, we continue to invest in the tools, expertise, and partnerships needed to ensure providers can capture high-quality data, demonstrate their impact, and contribute to a better understanding of mental health needs across England.
More Than Compliance
For us, MHSDS reporting has never been just about meeting a national requirement.
It is about ensuring that the experiences of the people accessing services, and the organisations supporting them, are reflected in the decisions that shape the future of mental health care.
Every submission tells part of that story.
Every provider contributes to that picture.
And after more than a decade of supporting MHSDS reporting, we are proud to continue helping organisations turn frontline activity into meaningful national insight.
